Two-day workshop with Brit Howard and Ky Francois

10 am - 4 pm
$150 + $40 materials ($15 discount for WhitPrint members)
About the Workshop
Learn the basics of poster printing in this introductory screen printing workshop. Day one will include discussions and demonstrations of the concepts, origins and techniques of screen printing. Topics will include application of emulsion and coating screens; materials used for developing an image to print; and image transfer (burning) to screen. Each student will also create their own image to print.
Day two will include overview on tools and techniques for printing as well as inks and substrates. We’ll see how to setup a screen for printing, go through the printing process, and breakdown and cleanup the workspace. We will regroup and discuss the experience, how to reclaim screens for further use, and how to set up a DIY printing area at home.
All materials and tools will be provded, including screens (one for each student), black poster ink, emulsion, and transparencies for creating images. We will provide sharpies and pens for drawing on the transparencies, but participants are welcome to bring their own tools (opaque black) as well. Paper will be provided so each student can print an edition of 8 to 10 prints. Time permitting, additional paper may be purchased at the studio for larger editions. At the end of the workshop, participants may purchase their screen to keep for $20.00.
About The Instructors
This workshop will be led by Brit Howard and Ky Francois of Threadbare Print House and Design, a women-owned and operated screen printing studio based in Eugene, Oregon. They specialize in printing exclusively in water based inks.
Brit graduated in 2007 with a BFA in Sculpture and Printmaking from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. When she is not making art or printing other people’s art she can be found axe throwing, raising chickens and riding her Triumph motorcycle...though not all at once.
Ky is currently working on a BFA in photography at the University of Oregon. He has 6 years of professional screen printing experience at Threadbare Print House. He enjoys screen printing stickers and posters, taking photos with large format view cameras, making zines, petting dogs and spending time with his friends.
