About the Workshop

The monotype process, often referred to as the painterly print, lends itself to spontaneous and gestural work that is unique to the medium. Nanette's monotypes carry a seemingly effortless energy, glowing from within. Her gestural figures and quirky still lifes are an emotional response to past and present experiences including her deep connection to water, light and nature within an imaginative narrative. Nanette finds monotypes to be a powerful tool in seeing values and breaking down barriers that also enhance her painting practice.

In this workshop you will create monotypes by applying and removing ink onto plexiglass plates with brayers, cotton cloths, brushes and other tools, then run the plates through an etching press to make original singular images. This workshop will include a combination of instruction, demonstration and presentation with an emphasis on studio time.

A range of monotype techniques will be covered beginning with monochromatic work focusing on light, value, impulse and experimentation. On the second day of the workshop Nanette will introduce limited color and layering techniques to add depth and interest to the work.

All levels are welcome from beginners to advanced with instruction tailored to individual needs and goals. You are encouraged to bring source material to work from if you plan to create representational work, ideally something simple/not complex. Non-representational work will be supported as well.

All materials and tools will be provided. You will have two large sheets of printmaking paper, which can be torn down to make at least 8 prints. Additional paper may be purchased at the studio.

About the Instructor

Nanette Wallace spent her childhood playing in the fields and forests of her home in Oregon. Her vivid imagination, desire to create and nod to nostalgia stem from these early experiences. She fell in love with printmaking and figure drawing while completing her BFA at Oregon State University. She has had a long and varied career in the arts as an award winning graphic artist, illustrator, letterpress printer, painter and printmaker. She now divides her time between her mountain retreat and home studio focusing primarily on monotypes, painting and cats. Nanette’s work has been displayed in local, national and International exhibitions and is represented in corporate, private and public collections, as well international print publications.

Studio Hygiene
Although there is no longer a State of Oregon requirement for indoor masking, WhitPrint continues to be considerate of studio users who may have ongoing concerns for reasons of existing health issues or advancing years. Therefore, we ask that all studio members, workshop participants, instructors, and visiting artists have a mask available and use it in crowded indoor spaces. We also ask everyone to be considerate of others and respect their comfort level regarding Covid.
