About the Workshop
Lithography is a traditional printing method based on the mutual repulsion of oil and water. Originally based on flat, smooth limestone slabs, similar methods may be used with aluminum plates.
In this workshop you will create an image on your plate using traditional litho drawing materials made from grease or oil-based substances. A variety of drawing materials will be available for experimentation.
With the drawing complete, the plate is then etched with a gum arabic and acid solution to stabilize the image and non-image areas. Water is sponged onto the plate, wetting only the non-image areas. When ready, an oil-based ink is “rolled up” onto the plate. The ink is attracted to the greasy image areas, and repelled by the wet non-image areas. (Magic!)
Finally, the plate and paper are passed through one of our lithography presses to transfer the ink onto the final print. The plate can then be re-inked to create multiples of the image.
This two-day intensive workshop is an excellent introduction to the lithographic process, without the need for heavy litho stones. No previous printmaking experience is required – just a willingness to draw an image on the plate and get a bit inky!
All materials are supplied, including special ball-grained aluminum plates, paper, ink and all process materials.
