Two-Saturday workshop with Noelle Herceg
September 23 and September 30
10:00 am to 4:00 pm
$150 plus $40 materials fee
(WhitPrint members: $135 plus $40 for materials)
About the Workshop
This two-day workshop will explore multicolor linocut printmaking using the reduction process. Working with a single linoleum block, we start with the basics of carving and printing the block using traditional oil-based ink. After the first color is printed, more linoleum is removed from the block to reveal the design for the second color, which is then printed on top of the first.
We will also learn about setting up an etching press for printing our blocks, techniques for registering the prints between colors, and how to safely use and clean oil inks without the need for solvents. Although the workshop only allows time for two colors, the techniques learned here can be applied to more complex designs with even more layers of color.
Participants should prepare sketches and ideas for their composition considering two colors. The design must fit a 6 x 7 inch area. On the first day, we will go over how to break down each composition into a different color/layer, and there will be time to finalize sketches before we get carving!
All tools and materials for this workshop are provided, including linoleum, carving tools, paper, traditional oil based ink, and brayers. Participants may keep their carving sets for their own use after the workshop.
All experience levels are welcome!
