About the Workshop

Stone lithography is one of the most popular and revered forms of fine art printmaking. Originally invented in 1796, this form of printmaking utilizes a limestone slab, made flat and smooth, and relies on the mutual repulsion of oil and water to transfer an image from the stone to the paper. Unique among printmaking techniques, stone lithography offers the artist a broad and exquisite range of mark-making. Famous artists from Daumier to Manet to Escher have all produced lithographic works.

And now, Whiteaker Printmakers is excited to offer for the first time a complete introduction to traditional stone lithography. In two evening sessions and one weekend, this workshop will cover all the basic steps involved, including graining and preparing the stone, drawing with a variety of materials, etching the stone, inking, and printing. Each participant will operate at least one of WhitPrint’s three litho presses.

This workshop will provide much information in a too-short amount of time! We encourage thorough note-taking. Once participants have learned the process, they may continue to practice lithography at WhitPrint as a member or visiting artist.
