About the Workshop

Discover the intaglio method of etching in this introductory workshop, designed for those eager to learn a timeless printmaking technique. Etching involves incising lines into a metal plate to create intricate designs that hold ink and from which you can make multiple prints. If you enjoy drawing, this is the printmaking process for you!

In this workshop, you will start by exploring examples of etched prints and learning about various techniques to help you plan your design. Noelle will guide you through each step of the etching process, from polishing and preparing a copper plate, to etching the final design in the acid bath. The workshop will also teach you how to use the etching press, properly soak and blot the paper, ink and wipe the copper plate, and pull the final print.

Before the workshop, we encourage participants to bring a 4” x 6” (or 6” x 4”) sketch to work from. Noelle will go over how to transfer your image to your copper plate.

All the tools and materials for this workshop are provided, including copper plates, etching needles, paper, and ink. This workshop is geared towards beginners who have never used the intaglio process before, but all experience levels are welcome.
