About the Workshop

Monotype printmaking is fun, simple to learn, and incredibly versatile! This 2-day workshop introduces beginning, intermediate, and advanced artists to various monotype printmaking methods.

There are many approaches to making monotypes — most involve transferring ink from plate to paper. In this workshop, we will apply pressure by hand and etching press to lift printmaking inks and watercolor from Plexiglas plates onto archival papers.

Enjoy a painterly printmaking weekend with WhitPrint’s co-founder and Director Emerita, Heather Halpern! Learn a variety of expressive printmaking methods, including Trace, Watercolor, and Pochoir Monotype! Explore Additive, Subtractive, and Stencil techniques. Heather is happy to share tips and tricks for creating expressive and captivating marks and textures.

Monotype styles range from extremely loose to ultra-tight; simplistic to complex; and monochromatic to colorful. Application of ink can be gestural or controlled, resulting in non-representational, abstracted, or realistic imagery.

This workshop encourages participants to explore line, tone, negative space, experimental mark-making, pattern, color combinations, masking, and more!

After explaining and demonstrating monotype methods, Heather will assist participants to ensure success and confidence in each process. Upon completion of the workshop, students will be able to print independently, which qualifies them for studio membership
