About the Workshop
Printmaking with Solarplate™ is a simple approach and safer alternative to traditional etching and relief printing. Solarplate is a prepared, light-sensitive polymer surface on a steel backing for artists to produce fine prints. All one needs is inspiration, a graphic image created on a transparent film (acetate or glass), sun or UV light, and ordinary tap water, and the process is ready to begin. Both positives and negatives can be utilized; intaglio and relief printing techniques can be applied. Read more about Solarplate at solarplate.com.
The workshop is geared for beginner and experienced. Starting with the basics, Robert has expanded the course outline to include using oil based inks as a drawing medium as well as doing glass frosting and photographic images.
Day 1:
Saturday starts with an introduction to materials and methods: what is Solarplate and how it works. Robert will provide examples of each technique including photo, drawing on glass, and drawing directly on the plate. He will discuss the choice of paper and how it effects the final print, the use of an etching press, and how to mix inks for effects. Robert will demonstrate creating a plate and printing with various inks and papers. Each student will do a test plate, and begin preparing for their first print.
Day 2:
On Sunday, each student will select at least two methods to try for their first prints. We will discuss editioning of prints, and have a critique at about mid-day. Finally, each student will run an edition of 5, with an artist's proof.
All studio materials will be provided. Bring a lunch and your creative ideas!
